Leap of Faith

Bsl_tour_lake_with_trees_2 We just don’t take leaps of faith anymore. At least my generation doesn’t. Brought up in an age of cynicism, we look for proof in objective benchmarks of data and performance. So when we have been told that Boiling Spring Lakes’ centerpiece -- Big Lake -- will soon have water again, we are naturally skeptical.

There have been controversies, fingers pointed, and lots of meetings. I recently read a front page article* about this issue in our local weekly, the State Port Pilot, and here’s what I have to report: floodgate repairs are scheduled to be completed this month, and the sinkholes have been identified.  All problems were compounded by the significant lack of rain in our area.  According to the reports, the Big Lake is eight feet below its typical level.

In February of 2002, the lake was completely drained to repair the sinkholes. (It has been researched and reported that the limestone that is underlying Boiling Spring Lakes is prone to sinkholes.) That’s it! The data that we needed to believe that our waterfront property will be facing water once again.

Now we know, it’s happened before -- repaired before -- and the beautiful Big Lake will indeed be restored once again. We all feel better that we’ve. . . been there. Done that.

Thanks for listening!
